Today, Windows Servers such as Windows 2003, 2008 & 2008 R2 provide
the runtime environment for many systems worldwide. Some may house
specific environments such as SQL Server, web services & Exchange,
whilst others provide security & authentication through Active
Directory, services such as file & print or application-related
services running custom services & storage.
Whichever combination you use, the chances are you'll realise the
importance of monitoring the status, both of the hardware and software
running on them. Should a "live" server fail, its quite likely
that systems, end users or customers will all be affected and so
detecting faults early, preferably before they cause these issues is of
prime importance.
Doing this manually is both time consuming and expensive in terms of
man power, especially in today's 24 x 7 world. A far better solution is
to automate the process, allowing it to respond or report faults should
they arise. With the Sentry-go Quick Server monitor, that's exactly what
you can do.

The Sentry-go Quick Server Monitor allows you to perform the
following essential monitoring tasks on your Windows server automatically ...
- Monitor
Windows services. Many server-based systems run as Windows
Services. Some are paramount to the operation of the server whilst
others provide system & custom logic. Monitoring the status of
these service is essential. Should they fail, the Quick Monitor can restart them automatically, thus minimising downtime
or notify you as required.
- Monitor Windows
Processes. Other, non service-based processes also
form a key part of many application servers. Ensuring critical
processes are available and preventing forbidden applications from
running can often be an important aspect of monitoring. Both are
easy to do with the Sentry-go Quick Monitor.
- TCP/IP Port
Access. Many network-based systems accept inbound
requests on so called "well known" ports. Others can use
custom ports to communicate. Verifying these ports are accessible is
therefore a good way of ensuring the underlying system is
functioning correctly, something easy to achieve with the Sentry-go
Quick Monitor.
- Windows
Firewall Security. In today's environments, security if often of
primary importance. One key feature of this is the Windows firewall,
which helps prevent unauthorised access to your servers &
systems. The Quick Monitor can automatically verify & enable the
firewall if its found to be disabled.
- Monitor Server
& System Performance. The monitor comes
pre-configured with settings that help ensure that key performance parameters are within expected limits.
But these can easily be further enhanced to cover other aspects of
your server's operation, depending on the systems it runs.
- Monitor errors written to the Windows Event
Log. Windows, system & application errors are
often written to the server's local Event Log. The Quick Monitor can check
& report on these based on event ID, message text etc.
- Text-based
Log Files. In addition to the Event Log, many 3rd party & custom
systems (and some larger ones such as SQL Server & IIS) also use
text-based log files to log errors and trace messages. These log
files can easily be monitored, based on
keywords using the Quick Monitor.
- Available disk
space. To run efficiently, your Windows server needs disk space.
Often forgotten, the lack of space can easily become a problem whtn
things get tight. Using the
Sentry-go Quick Monitor you can automatically ensure free space is
available, automatically clearing down temporary files & warning
you to the issue if this free space becomes more limited.

The Quick Server Monitor is part of the Sentry-go server
monitoring range of solutions. As such, other monitoring options can
also be added as required, thus
expanding your monitoring capabilities as your servers needs &
demands change.
Where software services are installed, you can monitor key aspects of
these to ensure correct operation - for example the HTML or
FTP
connectivity, ODBC/database
access or SQL
Server locking. If you have printers connected, you can monitor the printer &
associated print queues etc.
For domain controllers, Active Directory servers & application
services, a more customised solution may be required. With the Quick
Monitor, you can add your own monitoring &
have Sentry-go run & analyse the results!

Any Sentry-go Plus! monitoring component can be purchased and added to
the Quick Server Monitor.
For environments with larger numbers of monitors, the Sentry-go Enterprise Option
allows status & alert information from each system to be
collated & accessed centrally - i.e. across the enterprise. For
enterprise-wide reporting, this is the option for you! |
